UK Getting ITV/Channel 4 Streaming from PS3 This Week

We’ve been hearing quite a bit about a deal between Microsoft and AT&T that would essentially turn the Xbox 360 into an IPTV box but what about Sony’s Playstation 3? Well, while nothing has been said regarding the United States, it has been made known that the UK PS3 owners will be getting some content streaming of their own. of course, ti doesn’t seem like a huge roll out just yet but this intial test phase will bring with it content from both ITV and Channel 4.

If this deal is hugely successful (which it most likely will be) we can see IPTV streaming through home video game consoles becoming a huge trend and laying a clear path for the future of content consumption. Because cables boxes are so last decade.

3D games for PlayStation 3 at CES

At this year’s CES Sony presented a spectacular demo of ‘Wipeout HD’ space racing game in 3D.
Unlike children movies or feature movies which are completely unwatchable in 3D, PS3 games in 3D would probably be a great idea for most game players.

PS3 gadget can bypass HDCP copy protection

Our sister site, PSPSPS, has discovered a gadget that can bypass HDCP on the PS3.

The Gameswitch PS3-S201 allows the Playstation 3 to be connected via DVI to a non-HDCP certified monitor, and display content at 1080p resolution. As DVI doesn't handle sound, that will have to be routed separately to the TV or speaker system, though the unit does appear to have jacks for this.

It's unlikely to be a pirate's dream, as the method would only allow you to record a disc in real-time and without any audio. More useful for anyone with a slightly older DVI-based monitor that doesn't have the necessary content protection system in place, though at $199 it's not a pocket money gadget.

Watch out Wii, Sony outlines "astounding" PS3 rescue plan

Sony has outlined a plan to rescue the PlayStation 3 (PS3) from oblivion. Disappointingly, the plan has already received a thumbs down from a leading Japanese games expert.

Contrary to wide speculation, the plan does not include a price cut. Instead, Sony wants to work on relationships with third-party game publishers to improve the range ofgames available for the PS3.

“The most important thing for me at this point in time is to ensure that we have the breadth of software,” the chief executive of Sony’s video game unit, Kazuo Hirai, told the Wall Street Journal at the Tokyo Game Show industry conference.

“Price alone does not drive any product.”

Hirai said that he would improve communications with publishers, so that they will have a better idea of what Sony was planning. Publishers would also have input into Sony’s marketing strategy.

In an astounding move, Hirai also said that Sony will start marketing the PS3 as a games console, rather than as a super computer/home entertainment device. Apparently he’s realized that gamers above everything want agames console first and foremost.

This is obviously something that Sony has painfully learnt from Nintendo, which from day one has marketed its popular Wii games console, as a games console.

The president of market-research firm Enterbrain, Hirokazu Hamamura, expressed doubts about the rescue plan, explaining that he was disappointed that there was no price cut. As he pointed out, many game developers want to see more PS3 sales before they start working on newgames.
